The year 2019 was largely characterized by a return to normal harvest levels for the Swedish horticultural sector, after the unusually dry growth season in 2018. I some cases though, 2019 was an extraordinary year.

Within the greenhouse sector, the balance between cultivation of aromatic plants and potted lettuce shifted remarkably. These two product categories are commonly grown in parallel in the same cultivation systems. While the production of aromatic plants increased by almost 6 million pots, the production of potted lettuce decreased by 5 million pots.

In the open ground cultivation, the harvested area of the product category “Other lettuces” increased by 50 % between 2018 and 2019, which is even more remarkable in the light of the rather dramatic increase that took place already between 2017 and 2018. The category consists of all lettuce types except Iceberg lettuce, including small-leaved  mixes.

In total, almost 1 300 hectares of “Other lettuces” were harvested during 2019, as compared to some 850 hectares in 2018 and just shy of 700 hectares in 2017. The increase between 2018 and 2019 was not accompanied by any noticable increase in harvested amounts, indicating a shift in product composition within the category.

For cauliflower and apples, 2019 was a rather bad year from a production point of view. The cauliflower harvest was 22 % lower than the average for the preceding 5 years, while the apple harvest only amounted to 22 200 tons, the second lowest apple harvest recorded during the past decade.

Area-wise, strawberries were the largest Swedish horticultural crop during 2019, with a cultivated area of 2 400 hectares, followed by carrots on some 1 700 hectares and apples, which is cultivated on just over 1 500 hectares.
