Agricultural labour force slightly decreasing

The number of workers in the Swedish agricultural sector totalled 171 400 in 2016, a decrease by less than 1 % since 2013. The number of women in the agricultural labour force decreased by 1 %, while the number of men increased by 1 %.

The number of workers in sole trader holdings has decreased by 2 % since the 2013 survey. The number of workers in legal entities, on the other side, has increased by 5 % during the same period.

Sole traders getting older

In 2016, about 34 % of the sole traders were of age 65 or above. The corresponding rate for 2013 was 31 %. About 16 % of the sole traders in 2016 were women, which is unchanged compared with 2013.

The highest number of managers of legal entities, 29 %, is to be found in the age group 55-64 years, followed by the age group 45-54, where about 28 % of managers are to be found. About 14 % of all managers of legal entities in 2016 were women.

Increase of other gainful activities

In 2016, about 53 % of sole traders, their partners and family members had a major occupation outside the agricultural sector. The corresponding rate for the 2013 survey was 45 %. The rate of sole holders with a major occupation outside the agricultural sector in 2016 was 48 %, an increase with 8 percentage points compared with 2013.
