Summary

Increase in the number of occupied persons

The number of occupied persons in the Swedish agriculture sector in the year of 2007 totaled 177 615 persons, an increase of about 3 700 persons or 2 per cent since 2005 when the survey was last conducted. The number of women occupied in the Swedish agriculture sector increased by approximately 9 000 persons or 15 per cent, while the men occupied in the Swedish agriculture sector decreased by about 5 400 persons or approximately 4.8 %. The woman constitutes 39 per cent of the number of persons occupied in the Swedish agriculture sector.

The number of annual working units in the Swedish agriculture sector decreased by 9 per cent from 2005 to 2007. An annual working unit (AWU) refers to a yearly working time of at least 1 800 hours. Thus, the increase of the number of occupied persons does not correspond to an increase in the number of annual working units within the Swedish agriculture sector in 2007.

The number of woman occupied in agriculture in 2007 amounted to more than a third of the total number of occupied persons in Swedish agriculture. Meanwhile, the female share of the number of working units constitutes approximately 27 per cent in 2007, which is just above one fourth of the total amount of annual working units. Thus, the woman occupied in Swedish agriculture worked, on average, less hours than the men.

Increased number of woman as holders of holdings owned by private persons

Of the total number of occupied persons in the Swedish agriculture sector in 2007 around 158 000, or 89 per cent, was occupied at holdings owned by private persons. The number of female holders on such holdings was estimated to 15 per cent, or 10 200 persons. The corresponding number of 2005 was 12 per cent or 8 700 persons.

At holdings owned by legal persons, the number of female holders remains at approximately 9 per cent. This figure is unchanged since 2005.
