Summary

The purpose of this report has been to give an owerview of "other gainful activities" on the agricultural holding and income of the agricultural household. A short summary of the results follows below.

Other gainful activities on the agricultural holding

The main business income, about 71 percent, at agricultural holdings comes from agricultural activities. However, 29 percent of the business income comes from other gainful activities. These activities can be divided into three categories "Activities with direct relation to agriculture", "Activities without direct relation to agriculture" and "Forestry" which respectively represents 9, 11and 8 percent of the total business incomes on agricultural holdings.

It has been stated that "Forestry" seems to have less and less importance for the holdings over time while the other two kinds of activities seems to be more and more important.

The most important activities within the category " Activities with direct relation to agriculture" is different kinds of contract work. Together they represents a majority of the total turnover for the kategory. "Tourism", "Processing and selling agricultural products" and "Commersial horse activities" are the next most importand single activities.

The total working hours in "Activities with direct relation to agriculture" and "Activities without direct relation to agriculture" are distributed very similas to how it looks for the holdings agricultural activities looking at the holder, husband/wife, other family members and employees. However, there is one exception. Employees within "Activities without direct relation to agriculture" have a larger proportion there than in other categories.

Woman and men prefere very different other gainful activities. Men seems to focus on contract work while woman prefere "Tourism", "Processing and selling agricultural products" and "Commersial horse activities".

Income of the agricultural household

Business activities only represents 21 percent of the total income of the agricultural household. A majority, 21 percent, comes from employment, while 1 percent comes from incom from capital. There is only on a minority of the agricultural households where the main part of the incomes comes from business activities. The only type of farming where incomes from business activities were higher in average was "Dairy cows".

It has also been stated that female holders have lower income from business than male holders. Female holders only get 29 percent of the male holders. On the other hand, female holders have higher income from employment (9 percent higher).

Income from business activities has a strong positiv correlation to the size of arable land. The more arable land the higher income from business activities. Income from employment shows the opposit, the less arable land the higher income from employment.
