Summary

The results provided in this report are not directly comparable with results from 1998 and earlier on Net receipts etc. for farmers. The main reason for that is that from 1999 a wider household concept is used. Between 1999 and 2000 a change in the way of collecting the information to the Farm Register (LBR) has caused a considerable decrease in the number of older farmers. That has led to an increase between the years of about two percent higher for the averages for the whole population than it would have been if the old method for collection had been used. For a few variables like "Pensions", "Surplus from capital" and "Net income from capital" it has led to lower results. The impact is supposed to vary between different subgroups. The impact on the narrow population of IAHS seems to be small.

Total average income from employment and business was in year 2000 for all 75 261 agricultural households SEK 260 600. For farmers and spouses the income from business and employment has been calculated for women and men since 1996. For women income from business in year 2000 increased SEK 1 300 and income from employment increased SEK 6 400 so that total income from employment and business increased SEK 7 700 or 6 per cent to SEK138 500 between 1999and 2000. For men the corresponding changes were increases with SEK 4 200 and 5 400 so that total income from employment and business increased SEK 9 600 or 6 per cent to SEK 164 400 between 1999 and 2000.

The average income before tax-free positive transfers and taxes was for all agricultural households SEK 298 800 in year 2000 while the income after transfers was SEK 205 500. Households in which the farmer was 65 years or older had the lowest average income both before transfers (SEK 216 500) and after transfers (SEK 154 200). The biggest income had households on farms with more than 200 hectares of arable land (SEK 266 900 after transfers).

Up to 1998 the Swedish calculations for the Eurostat statistics IAHS (Income of the Agricultural Households Sector) were based on the Income distribution survey. From 1999 the Swedish calculations are based on the connection between the Farm Register (LBR) and the Income and Wealth register (IoF).

The number of agricultural households ("narrow definition") in year 2000 was 18 339 or 24 per cent of all households in the Farm Register and 0.4 per cent of all households. Their Current receipts was SEK 380 500. Of that sum 67 per cent came from Independent activity (including 7 per cent from Net operating surplus from imputed rental value of owner dwellings), 19 per cent from Independent activity (including 6 per cent from Employers' social contributions), 11 per cent from Social benefits received and 3 per cent from Property income received. The average Net disposable income was SEK 213 400, an increase by SEK 18 400 or 9 per cent. That increase was the second highest among the four main socio-professional group. Only the group households consisting of other employers and own account workers than farmers had a higher increase (SEK 19 900) to SEK 202 600. The group Employees still had the highest Net disposable income (SEK 232 800) in year 2000 but the increase was only SEK 10 800 or 5 per cent. If the differences in seize of the households would be taken into consideration the results per person would be different.

As the results for the farmers are based on registers including all agricultural households it is possible to divide the agricultural households by the narrow definition of IAHS into subgroups. (Table 14 - 16)
