Summary

Background

The Farm Economics Survey (JEU) is an annual book-keeping survey. JEU has fulfilled several purposes. For a long time the use of statistics for agricultural policy analyses has dominated. The aim of the survey is to illustrate the development of receipts and costs in agriculture.

As a member of EU Sweden is obliged to deliver data to the Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN). Annually a database containing data on 1 000 farms is delivered to DG Agri at the European Commission.

Data contents and data management

At a first step the nominal net result is calculated on the basis of running cost. The base of the calculations are nominal results in agriculture at current costs. The current cost for an asset is the replacement value reduced by depreciation. The results are also given at acquisition costs. In the latter case depreciations are calculated at acquisition costs.

In data management Statistics Sweden (SCB) cooperates with LRF Konsult, an accounting organisation owned by the Federation of Swedish Farmers and with local agents all over the country and. For some farms data is collected and delivered by Lantbruksekonomen, a small consulting firm (results from those farms are not included in this report).

The information is collected electronically and is returned to Statistics Sweden. The data are checked to see if they are complete and legible.

The information is then entered into the database and subjected to extensive control processing, including checks of adding up and a comparison with test values. Certain data are computer corrected during the processing. If the data are not accepted in the checking process, a control statement is written out to be used as the basis for a manual check. In certain cases the control statement is sent to LRF Konsult for further investigation.

Statistical contents

The population in JEU covers all types of farming and all size classes exceeding a lower cut of limit (8 ESU) and the sample includes 1 000 holdings. In this report statistics for 860 holdings is presented. The definition of the population and the stratification build on the EU-typology (based on Standard Gross Margins).

The EU-typology is used when new farms are sampled. The register of holdings in agriculture and forestry (the Farm Register) - which is the basis for most agricultural statistics - is used as sampling frame in JEU. The sample has been stratified according to three major geographical areas combined with type of farming and size class. Survey participation is voluntary.

Accuracy

As JEU is a sample survey the resulting statistics do not provide exact values of the target characteristics. The discrepancy between the values of a statistic and its target characteristics can be referred to as an error.

The sampling errors in JEU emanate from the fact that only a sample of the population units, not all, are observed. In this report the sampling errors are given in the tables of results. Relative standard error is presented for every estimate in the tables.

There are also general survey errors in JEU which must be taken into account. The main source of error is non-response, which mainly occur in the recruitment of farms for the first year of participation. For the new part of sample the non-response rate is around 50 %. Non-responding farms are substituted by similar (type group, size, region) farms from a supplementing random sample.

Measurement errors have decreased since the controls of data have been successively improved.

Availability

Nationally the accounting results are presented in the Statistical Report covering the calendar year 2001. A summary of the JEU-results is presented in the Yearbook of Agricultural Statistics. The statistics presented are classified in accordance with Swedish typology as well as EU-typology. In all tables the results are classified by major regions and by size classes. The results are also available in the Swedish Statistical Databases.

Statistics presented by Swedish typology are regionally classified by "riksområde". The regional breakdown of statistics presented by EU-typology differs a little from "riksområde" as a grouping of counties are used.

As a consequence of the principles in the typology systems the Swedish typology is presented in size groups based on standardised labour requirements and the EU-typology is grouped on European Size Units (ESU).

Micro-data from JEU are delivered from Statistics Sweden to the European Commission, which is responsible for FADN. The main use of FADN-data is for internal analysis of the common agricultural policy. The standard tables of aggregated FADN-data are disseminated via internet.

A wide range of JEU-data are stored in a micro database at Statistics Sweden. On request special extracts on aggregated data can be received. Given specifications on such an extraction, Statistics Sweden is willing to give an offer of the work.

Time and comparability over time

JEU is an annual survey. Data in this report covers the calendar year 2001 and is restricted to farms managed as natural persons. The JEU database also includes data referring to juridical persons, which is delivered to FADN.

To facilitate the comparisons between JEU 2001 and JEU 2000 a summary of the 2001 and 2000 results are given in the beginning of this report. The comparison is restricted to a constant sample of farms participating both years.
