The number of organic dairy cows increased by 11 % in 2018
This report contains statistics on fully converted
organic livestock in Sweden. The statistics cover livestock reared using
organic production methods according to Council Regulation (EC) No 834/2007 of
28 June 2007 on organic
In June 2018, 332 300 or 22 % of the cattle were converted to organic production methods, an increase by almost 8 % since 2017. The number of dairy cows increased by 11 % and the number of suckler cows increased by 7 %. 18 % of the dairy cows and 35 % of the suckler cows were fully converted to organic farming in 2018.
The number of fully converted sheep was 128 900 in 2018, an increase by 2 % compared with 2017. The share of organic sheep in relation to the total number of sheep was 22 %.
The number of organic laying hens has steadily been increasing up until 2016 but in 2017, the number of laying hens faced a decrease. In 2018, 1 283 100 or 17 % of the laying hens were fully converted to organic production methods, an increase by 3 % compared with 2017.
For pigs and broilers the number of organic holdings are low. In 2018 the number of organic pigs increased by 9 % to 33 600 compared with 2017. About 2 % of the total number of pigs in Sweden are fully converted to organic production methods
In 2018, the number of broilers faced a major decrease although the number of producers was the same as in 2017. Compared with 2017, the number of broilers decreased by 25 % to 128 400. The share of organic broilers was 1 %.
