A general increase in the number of organic livestock
This report contains statistics on fully converted organic livestock in Sweden. The statistics cover livestock reared using organic production methods according to Council Regulation (EC) No 834/2007 of 28 June 2007 on organic production and labelling of organic products and repealing Regulation (EEC) No 2092/91.
In June 2016, 296 300 or 20 % of the cattle were converted to organic production methods, an increase by almost 4 % since 2015. 15 % of the dairy cows and 35 % of the suckler cows were fully converted to organic farming in 2016.
The number of fully converted sheep was 130 700 in 2016, an increase by 7 % compared with 2015. The share of organic sheep in relation to the total number of sheep was 23 %.
In 2016, 1 272 900 or 16 % of the laying hens were fully converted to organic production methods, an increase by 14 % compared with 2015. The number of organic laying hens has steadily been increasing and, in total, the number has increased by 74 % since 2010.
For pigs and broilers the number of organic holdings are low. During 2016, however, the number of animals increased. Compared with 2015, the number of organic pigs increased 8 % and the number of broilers increased 177 %. Despite large increases in the number of organic animals during the last two years, the share of organic pigs and broilers is still low in relation to the total number of animals, about 2 % for each category.
