Horses are considered to be of increasing importance in Swedish society. Up until now statistics on horses have only been minor. Horses at agricultural holdings have been covered regularly, but these consist of only one-third of all horses in Sweden.
In autumn 2004, Statistics Sweden was commissioned by the Swedish Board of Agriculture to carry out a survey aiming at estimating the total number of horses and the number of establishments with horses. An establishment can be e.g. a trainer, a riding school, a farm holding or a private family stable. It is looked upon as one unit even in the case that there are several owners/users of the horses who care for the horses independently.
The results of this survey are presented here.
The population was divided into four sub-populations:
Data was gathered mainly by a postal survey, except for municipalities, for which data was gathered by collecting administrative registers covering stable inspections.
According to the survey, there were 283 100 horses in Sweden in October 2004. There were 56 000 establishments with horses.
The number of horses shows a strong positive correlation to the number of inhabitants. As an average for the whole country, there are 31 horses for every 1 000 inhabitants.
