In June 2011, the number of dairy cows was 346 500, a decrease by approximately 1 600 animals compared to June 2010. Since 1995 the number of dairy cows has decreased by almost 135 600 or 28 %.
The number of holdings with dairy cows has continued to decrease since June 2010. In June 2011 such holdings amounted to 5 300. The number of holdings with cows for calf production decreased from 12 200 in 2010 to approximately 11 800 in 2011, a decrease by 400 holdings.
The number of pigs has also shown a decrease since 2010. Fattening pigs decreased by 36 000 animals between 2010 and 2011. This corresponds to a decrease by approximately 4 %. The number of sows and boars has decreased by 3 200 animals or 2 % since 2010. Since 1995, the number of holdings with production of fattening pigs has decreased by 84 % or 7 000 holdings whereas the breeders of piglets have decreased by 87 % or 5 900 holdings.
Between 2010 and 2011 the number of sheep has increased by 57 800 animals which is a change of approximately 10 %. Compared to 1995 the number of sheep has increased by more than 35 %. However there has not been any significant change in the number of holdings with sheep since 1995 (9 400 holdings with ewes and rams, and 8 000 holdings with lambs). Between June 1995 and June 2011 the number of holdings with sheep has decreased by approximately 6 %. The last year there has however been an increase in the number of holdings.
The number of fowls has increased by 5 % since 1995. Between 2010 and 2011, there was a 5 % increase in the number of fowls and a 3 % increase in the number of holdings with fowls.
