Number of cattle continues to decrease

The number of cattle has decreased during the recent years. Since the last census, which was performed in 2007, the number of cattle has decreased by more than 23 000 animals. The category dairy cows constitutes the greatest part of this decrease. The category suckler cows is the only one which has increased steadily since 1995.

Despite this, and the fact that the number of cattle holdings has decreased, the size of herd for cattle has increased. At the same time as the average size of herd has increased by 9 % or 6 animals, the number of holdings has decreased by 2 300 since 2007, when the last census was conducted.

Increased production in sheep holdings

The number of ewes and rams has increased by 40 % since 1995. The number of lambs has increased by 10 % during the same period. In total the number of sheep has increased by 56 000 since 2007. There is a decrease in the number of sheep holdings and the average herd size has thus increased. The average herd size for ewes and rams was 20 heads in 1995, in 2010 it was 32 heads.

Major increase in pigs herd size

The number of pigs decreased in 2010 which is a continuation of the steady downward trend since 1995. In total the number of pigs has decreased by more than 156 000 since 2007. The number of breeders decreased as well. The number of breeders of fattening pigs has fallen by 500 since 2007. The number has decreased by approximately 83 %, or 6 900 breeders, since 1995. The average herd size has increased since 1995 though, and the trend continues in 2010 as well. A breeder of fattening pigs has a herd of 660 heads on average; in 1995 the same figure was 160.
