Summary

A small decrease in the number of cattle

The total number of cattle in Sweden is calculated decrease between 2004 and 2005. The total number of cattle in June 2005 was 1 619 500. The number of cows are approximately the same 2005 as in 2004, though there has been an decrease in dairy cows and an increase in other cows.

Since last year the total number of heifers, bulls and steers is estimated to have decreased whith 1,4 % while the number of calves have been almost unchanged.

A decrease in the number of sows and pigs for fattening

The number of sows and pigs for fattening are estimated to decrease with 2-3 % between 2004 and 2005. The figures concerning different type of animals for 2005 are still uncertain and will probably change when definitive figures are available.

The number of sheeps continues to increase

The number of sheeps is expected to have increased up to 479 400 in June 2005. This is more than 5 % higher than 2004 and almost 7 % higher than 2003. It is also the highest number of sheeps since 1950.
