Summary

The statistics in this report is based on the Swedish Farm Register. It is updated by using postal questionnaires and administrative sources such as the register on the farmers applications for area based subsidies. The changes in agricultural policy following the Mid Term Review were implemented in Sweden in 2005. As a consequence of the new policy the number of applications for area based subsidies increased considerably in 2005. A large part of the new applications could not be linked to existing holdings in the Farm Register and this led to an increase in the number of holdings in the Farm Register. The increase does not necessarily mean that the actual structure of the agricultural sector changed correspondingly.

Increasing number of small farms

Having decreased continuously since the mid nineteen eighties, the number of agricultural holdings increased by 7 920 or 12 % to 75 808 holdings between 2003 and 2005. The holdings that were added mainly consisted of small farms - i.e. holdings with a calculated yearly labour requirement of less than 400 hours. Between 2003 and 2005 there was an increase in the number of such holdings by nearly 10 000 or 64 %. However, between 2005 and 2007 the number of agriculture holdings once again decreased, from 75 808 to 72 609. Although there was a slight decrease in the number of small farms, the figure still remains close to 25 000 as opposed to around 15 000 in 2003. Holdings with animal husbandry as its main occupation as well as holdings practicing mixed farming have decreased continuously since 2000. Holdings with crop production as its main occupation increased slightly between 2003 and 2005. However, in 2007, the number of holdings with crop production was lower than the corresponding figure in 2000, 2003, and 2005.

Decreasing labour requirement

The calculated total labour requirement in agriculture continued to decrease from 106 177 to 100 103 (thousands) between the years 2005 and 2007. The decrease occurred mainly within animal husbandry. However, animal husbandry remains the sector in Swedish agriculture with the highest labour requirement. In addition, a decrease of the labour requirement can be noted for holdings with crop production and mixed farming as its main occupation. A small decrease in the labour requirement of small farms has been noted as well. In 2007, the labour requirement of almost 75 % of the agricultural holdings is less than one full-time employed person.
