Summary

Effects of the Mid Term Review on agricultural statistics

The statistics in this report is based on the Swedish Farm Register. It is updated by using postal questionnaires and administrative sources such as the register on the farmers applications for area based subsidies. The changes in agricultural policy following the Mid Term Review was implemented in Sweden in 2005. As a consequence of the new policy the number of applications for area based subsidies increased considerably. A large part of the new applications could not be linked to existing holdings in the Farm Register and this led to an increase in the number of holdings in the Farm Register. The increase does not necessarily mean that the actual structure of the agricultural sector changed correspondingly.

The share of rented holdings diminishes

The number of holdings increased from 66 780 in 2003 to 75 808 in 2005. A large part of the increase was due to the change in agricultural policy. Moreover, statistics for 2005 included holdings with none or very limited arable land but with large animal stock or horticultural production. Thus the number of holdings in 2005 is not fully comparable to the earlier years.

The share of owned holdings decreased from 58 % to 45 % between the years 1970 and 2003 and increased to 52 % in 2005. The share of rented or partly rented holdings fell correspondingly between 2003 and 2005. The percentage of rented arable land fell from 45 % in 2003 to 40 % in 2005.

Every fifth holder is 65 years or older

A little more than every fifth holder in agriculture was 65 years or older in 2005. Roughly two thirds of the holders were between 40 and 65 years old. The diffenence in age between women and men was small, although the share of younger holders was somewhat higher for women than for men. About 14 % of the women were 40 years or younger compared to 11 % of the men.
