One third of the arable land needs new or refurbished drainage
Nearly 80 % of the arable land in Sweden has satisfactory drainage according to a survey performed by the Swedish Board of agriculture. 49 % of the land has tile drainage according to the same survey. 14 % of the arable land is in need of new tile drainage and 14 % of the land is in need of refurbished tile drainage according to the survey. But for the coming 5 years only 6 % of the land is planned to have either new tile drainage or refurbished tile drainage.

The share of land with tile drainage is almost twice as large in 2013 compared to 1927 when the first estimation in Sweden was made. That year 25 % of the arable land had tile drainage.
4 out of 10 plans maintenance cleaning of ditches
The spread of open ditches is larger than the spread of culvert ditches among the Swedish farmers. 71 % has open ditches to some extent while 39 % has culvert ditches to some extent. An extent of between 101 – 1 000 m is the most common situation.
44 % of the farmers have maintained their open ditches the last 5 years. Regarding culvert ditches that share is 19 % and one out of two doesn’t know when the most recent maintenance of their culvert ditches was performed. Over 50 % of the holdings think there is a need for maintenance of the open ditches, over 20 % has this opinion of their culvert ditches. 44 % of the holdings plans for maintenance actions the coming 5 years while the share planning for culvert ditches maintenance is 14 %.
Only a small proportion of the holdings has arable land that is embanked and/or dependent on pumping for its drainage, this only exists within 4 % of the holdings. 31 % of the holdings belong to a ditch association, 31 % of these have an active management.
