Summary

The area of cereals decreases while ley and green fodder increases

The total area of arable land in Sweden has been estimated to 2,660,400 hectares in the year 2006. This is a decrease by 2 % compared to the year 2005.

The area of cereals has been estimated to 978,400 hectares in the year 2006, which is a decrease by 4 % since the year 2005. Primarily the area of barley decreased (-17 %), while the other cereal crops increased slightly. Between 2004, the year before the new Single Farm Payment was introduced, and 2006, the area of cereals has decreased by 13 %.

The total area of pasture and green fodder increased between the years 2005 and 2006 by 4 % to 1,112,700 hectares. Between the years 2004 and 2006, the area of pasture and green fodder increased by 15 %.

The area of rape and turnip rape increased by 10 % between the years 2005 and 2006. Since the year 2000, the area of rape and turnip rape has increased by 87 %.

The area of pasture and meadows decreases slightly

The total area of pasture and meadows has been estimated to 503,000 hectares in the year 2006, which is a decrease by 2 % since the year 2005. Pasture and meadows consists of grazed alvar, forest pasture, mountain pasture and mown meadow.

The number of holdings decreases

The number of holdings with more than 2.0 hectares of arable land in the year 2006 has been estimated to 72,751, which is 2,112 fewer than in the year 2005. This is equivalent to a decrease by 3 %. Holdings with at least 100 hectares of arable land were about the same in 2006 as they were in 2005. For smaller holdings, the decrease is about 3 %.
