In the period between the first of July 2016 and the last of June 2017, 842 959 metric tonnes of inorganic fertilizers were sold for agri- and horticultural purposes in Sweden, which was 16 % over the average amount for the preceding five-year period and the largest amount since 2003/04. Straight nitrogen fertilizers together with composite NPK-fertilizers made up more than 95 % of the total amount of sold fertilizers.
In total, 524 732 tonnes of straight nitrogen fertilizers were sold, representing 61 % of the total amount of fertilizers sold, while composite NPK-fertilizers amounted to 34 %. Among the straight nitrogen fertilizers, 80 % consisted of compounds with a nitrogen content of 24–30 %, while the sales of NPK-fertilizers exhibited a more even distribution between fertilizers with different compositions.
From a nutrient point of view, 198 460 tonnes of nitrogen were sold, which was 15 % more than the average for the preceding five years. The amount of phosphorus sold has increased for eight consecutive years, reaching 14 381 tonnes in 2016/17. In total, 67 % of the nitrogen was sold in the form of straight nitrogen fertilizers, while 32, 66 and 77 % of the nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium respectively was sold as NPK-fertilizers.
The average concentration of each nutrient in straight nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers was 26, 20 and 35 % (weight by weight) respectively. Composite fertilizers containing the respective nutrient had average concentrations of 22, 4.5 and 8.2 % for each of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.
