Close to 1.8 million Swedish households cultivated some form of edible plant in 2012. The share of cultivating households differed depending on housing type. While more than 60 % of the households in detached houses, farms and holiday cottages cultivated edible plants, the same share for apartment households was 23 %. Just over half of the cultivating households were situated in Götaland, while a third and a sixth were situated in Svealand and Norrland respectively.

The most common crops were apple, currants, chives, parsley and tomato, each of which was cultivated by between 15 and 24 % of the Swedish households. Apple was the most popular crop in Götaland as well as Svealand, while currants were the most common crop in Norrland. While apple was the most common crop in detached house households, farm households and holiday cottage households, tomato was the most popular crop in apartment households.

Apple was also the largest crop with respect to harvested amounts, followed by potato, currants, plums and pears. Just under 14 900 metric tons of apple was harvested in Swedish households in 2012, compared with the 23 400 tons produced by Swedish commercial apple growers the same year. When seen from that perspective, rhubarb, currants and raspberries are all examples of crops that exhibited a larger harvest in the leisure gardening than in the domestic commercial production. The currant harvest in Swedish households was more than 17 times higher than in the commercial production.

In some cases the harvest from leisure cultivation constituted a significant share of the total Swedish consumption of specific crops. The household harvest of fresh berries amounted to almost 14 % of the total consumption of fresh berries in 2012. Similarly, the combined household harvest of apples and pears constituted just under 9 % of the total Swedish consumption of these fruits.
