Between the 1st of July 2011 and the 30th of June 2012, 615 212 metric tons of inorganic fertilizers were sold for agri- and horticultural purposes in Sweden, representing a 13 % decrease since the year before and an 11 % decrease compared with the average amount for the preceding five years. Sales of straight fertilizers amounted to 57 weight percent of the total, while composite fertilizers made up the remaining 43 percent.

The absolute majority of the sold fertilizers consisted of straight nitrogen fertilizers and composite NPK-fertilizers, together amounting to 97 % of the sold weight. Among the straight nitrogen fertilizers, 80 % consisted of compounds with a nitrogen content of 24–30 %, while the largest category of NPK-fertilizers – making up 22 weight percent of sales – consisted of 20–22 % nitrogen, 3–4 % phosphorus och 9–10 % potassium.

The average content of nitrogen and sulphur in fertilizers generally increased from the middle of the 1990:s until the end of the 2000:s, after which it leveled off at just over 24 % for nitrogen and 3 % for sulphur. In contrast, the average content of phosphorus and potassium decreased over time and is now just under 4 % for the former, and 2 % for the latter. Out of the total amount of sold nitrogen, 61 % was sold in straight fertilizers, while the overwhelming majority of phosphorus and potassium was sold in the form of NPK-fertilizers. Practically all of the sold sulphur was sold in straight nitrogen fertilizers or in NPK-compositions.
