Summary

The sales of fertilizers decreased 2005/06

The total sales of commercial fertilizers amounted to 712 thousand metric tons during the fertilizer year 2005/06, which was a decrease by nearly 2 percent compared to 2004/05. During the last five years the sales have continuously decreased. Between 2001/02 and 2005/06 the sales of fertilizers decreased by 20 percent.

In terms of plant nutrient content the sales of nitrogen in 2005/06 decreased by 1 percent to 160 thousand metric tons, compared to the year before. The changes in sales of other recorded nutrients, such as phosphorus and potassium, decreased by 10 and 7 percent respectively. The changes in sulphur amounted in a decrease with 3 percent. The phosphorus fertilizers contained about 81 kg of cadmium.

The main reason for the decrease in the use of nitrogen between 2005 and 2006 was a reduction in the cultivated area of cereals. The fact that an increase in the area of winter crops, which generally receives higher doses of nitrogen, indicates the opposite effect. An increase of oilseeds should also effect the use of nitrogen to a higher level.

A decline in profitability in cultivation of cereals might also have led to lesser use of phosphorus and potassium. Fertilizers with lower content of phosforus and potassium have been introduced the last years, which indicates a decrease in the use.

The changes in the area of organic farming were so small between 2005 and 2006 that the effect in the use of nitrogen probably was insignificant.

The changes in area planted, can not be expected as permanent. An increase in for example energi crops, can be expected to result in av higher use of fertilizers. The prices of crops, which now increases, can also affect that the sales increases.

The item "Fertilizers" in Input Price Index showed an increase by about 4 percent during 2005/06 compared to previous year. This item reflects the price changes for the mix of fertilizers that was used last year.
