Summary

The statistical tables in this document are put together with the purpose of illustrating how Swedish agriculture has developed during the past 200 years according to published statistics. Statistics have continously become more reliable during the period, especially from the beginning of the 19th century till the middle of the 20th century. Figures from the 19th century are probably underestimating real conditions. Statistical quality is estimated to be good from the late 1920s.

From 1927 to 2004 the number of holdings with more than 2 hectares of arable land has decreased from 307 400 to 65 800 or almost 80 %. Holdings with small areas of arable land are the ones that have shown the most drastic reductions, while holdings with more than 100 hectares of arable land have increased from 2 500 to 6 100. During the same period the total area of arable land diminished from 3 563 to 2 661 thousand hectares, or with 25 %. The number of cattle decreased from 2 899 to 1 628 thousand heads (-44 %), while the number of pigs increased from 1 387 to 1 818 thousand heads (+31 %).

From 1951 to 2003 the number of people employed in agriculture has decreased from 869 000 to 168 000, i.e. with more than 80 %. Since 1961 the farmers´ age distribution has not varied much.

The total harvest of cereals has increased from 2 356 thousand metric tons during the latter half of the 1920s to 5 444 thousand metric tons during the first years at the 21st century, i.e. more than 130 %. The main reason for this was great increases in hectare yields - from 1 700 to 4 750 kg/ha as an average or approximately 180 %. From the latter part of the 1920s production of potatoes has decreased from 1 656 to 919 thousand metric tons, mostly due to the decreased area under cultivation.

Annual production of meat from cattle and pigs has amounted to about 140-145 and 295 thousand metric tons respectively during the beginning of the 21st century - approximately 15 and 75 % higher than at the beginning of the 1950s. During the same period poultry production has risen sevenfold. Milk production has decreased from 4 500 to somewhat less than 3 300 thousand metric tons or with more than 25 %.
