Continued strong monthly variations in slaughter of pigs

232 400 tonnes of milk were delivered to dairies in August 2017, which is 1 % less than the same month of 2016. Figure A shows the monthly milk quantities back to January of 2014. The production of drinking milk in August was 66 000 tonnes. Also produced during August were 9 000 tonnes of cream, 7 500 tonnes of cheese and 1 200 tonnes of butter.

During the month of August 37 500 cattle, including about 1 200 calves, were slaughtered. The total slaughter weight of cattle was roughly 12 400 tonnes, which is the highest listing of 2017 to date. In comparison with August of 2016, the slaughter weight increased with 2 %. In all but one category, Male bovine animals age under 2 years, the slaughter decreased compared with last year’s August listings. Figure B shows how the cattle slaughter has developed since January 2014.

The monthly variations in pig slaughter continued in August. Almost 231 300 pigs were slaughtered during this month with a total slaughter weight of 21 300 tonnes. Compared with the August listings of 2016 and 2015 the slaughter weight increased with 6 % and 18 % respectively. This difference and the development in pigs slaughter can be seen in Figure C.

In August the slaughter of sheep, rams, and lambs was almost 25 100 animals, at a total slaughter weight of 520 tonnes, a 7 % increase in comparison with August of 2016. Figure D shows the development in the slaughter of sheep, rams, and lambs since 2014.

The amount of slaughtered poultry during August was about 13 700 tonnes, which is a 1 % decrease from last August’s listing. The slaughter was less in all categories, considerably less in the slaughter of hens. 96 % of the slaughtered poultry consisted of chicken, where the slaughter was 1 % less than the corresponding month last year. Development in the slaughter of poultry since 2014 is illustrated in Figure E.

Egg delivery statistics for August are not yet finished. They will be published in the Board of Agriculture Statistics Database when available.
