20-year low in milk deliveries for all months this far in 2017

237 500 tonnes of milk were delivered to dairies in July 2017, about 1 % less than in July 2016. Figure A shows monthly variations in quantities since 2014. In 2017, each month this far the milk deliveries have been the lowest for at least 20 years. 59 000 tonnes of drinking milk, 8 100 tonnes of cream, 7 800 tonnes of cheese and 1 700 tonnes of butter were also produced in July.

In total, 28 400 cattle, of which just short of 800 were calves, were slaughtered in July 2017. Their total slaughter weight was roughly 9 500 tonnes, which is 1 % more than in July 2016, but about 6 % less than in July 2015. Compared to July 2016, the slaughter was smaller in the categories calves, cows and young cattle. Remaining categories saw an unchanged or increased slaughter. Figure B shows the developments in cattle slaughter since January 2014.

This month also saw the unusually large fluctuations in pig slaughter of this year abating. Almost 214 700 pigs were slaughtered in June, with a total slaughter weight just over of 19 900 tonnes. When compared to July 2016, the slaughter of sows and young pigs decreased somewhat, but the slaughter of boars and fattening pigs increased. The developments in pig slaughter are illustrated in Figure C.  The slaughter of sheep, ram, and lamb was 10 % higher in July 2017 than in the same month of the previous year. Slightly over 17 000 animals were slaughtered in July and their combined slaughter weight was 350 tonnes. Figure D shows how the total slaughter of sheep, rams and lambs has developed since 2014.

The amount of slaughtered poultry was almost 12 500 tonnes in July 2017, roughly 3 % less than in the same month of 2016. The slaughter of hens was 16 % higher than in July 2016, but turkey slaughter was 3 % lower. About 95 % of the slaughtered amount of poultry remains chicken, and it was down 4 % compared to July 2016. Figure E shows how the total slaughter of poultry has developed since the year 2014.

Egg delivery statistics for the month of July are not yet finished. They will be published in the Board of Agriculture Statistics Database as soon as they are available.
