Rebounding slaughter statistics in May 2017
During the summer, “Animal products” is published at irregular intervals. The publishing date of this Statistical Message, SM1707, is relatively early hence not all of the usual data is yet available. Data on dairy production and egg deliveries in May are still unavailable, As soon as it becomes available it will be published in the Swedish the Board of Agriculture Database.
In total, 34 300 cattle, of which 1 200 were calves, were slaughtered in May 2017. Their total slaughter weight was roughly 11 300 tonnes, which is 2 % more than in May 2016, and 10 % more than in May 2015. This years’ trend of unusually large monthly variations in slaughter numbers appears sustained and is made evident in figure A, which shows the developments in cattle slaughter since January 2014. While overall cattle slaughter was greater than in May of previous years, the slaughter was smaller in the categories calves, heifers and young cattle.
There was a marked increase in the slaughter of pigs in May 2017, both compared to the previous month and to the same month of earlier years. 225 200 pigs were slaughtered, with a total slaughter weight just short of 21 200 tonnes. When compared to May 2016, the slaughter of sows, boars and young pigs decreased somewhat. But the slaughter of boars and fattening pigs increased. The developments in pig slaughter are illustrated in Figure C.
The slaughter of sheep, ram, and lamb was also greater in May 2017 than in May the two preceding years. 17 600 animals were slaughtered in May 2017, 21 and 30 % more than in May of 2016 and 2015 respectively. Figure D shows how the total slaughter of sheep, rams and lambs has developed since 2014. During these years, it has not been greater in May than this year.
The amount of slaughtered poultry was almost 14 000 tonnes in May 2017, nearly 3 % more than in the same month of 2016. The slaughter of hens was 46 % greater and the turkey slaughter 7 %. More than 95 % of the slaughtered amount of poultry however, consists of chicken, which was up 2 % compared to May 2016. All in all, the slaughter of poultry also experienced a rebound after the sharp fall in April. Figure E shows how the total slaughter of poultry has developed since the year 2014.
The next Statistical Message in the Animal products series, SM1708, won’t be published until the 5th of September. The Swedish Board of Agriculture Database, however, may be updated with dairy production and egg delivery data for the month of May before then.
