Poultry and lambs the only kinds of animals of which the slaughter increased in February 2017

225 400 tonnes of milk were delivered to dairies in February 2017, almost 6 % less than in February 2016. Part of the explanation could be 2016 being a leap year, with February having an extra day. Figure A shows variations in quantities since 2014. 63 900 tonnes of drinking milk, 9 300 tonnes of cream, 6 500 tonnes of cheese and 1 400 tonnes of butter were also produced in February.

In total, 31 100 cattle, of which 1 100 were calves, were slaughtered in February 2017. Their total slaughter weight was roughly 10 000 tons, which is 6 % less than in February of the two preceding years. The decline is evident in all kinds of cattle; calves, bulls and cows. The developments since January 2014 are shown in Figure B. 202 100 pigs were slaughtered in February, with a total slaughter weight of almost 19 300 tons. This is a decline of almost 5 % since February 2016. The developments in pig slaughter are illustrated in Figure C. The slaughter of horses was also lower than in February of previous years, about 190 animals compared to 230 and 270 in the years 2016 and 2015. The only animasl with red meat where the slaughtered has not declined are found in the category sheep, rams and lamb. In February 2017, 13 500 of them were slaughtered which is 3 and 4 % more than in 2016 and 2015 respectively. Figure D shows how the total slaughter of sheep, rams and lambs has developed.

The amount of slaughtered poultry almost reached 13 200 in February 2017, an increase of about 6 % compared to the same month of 2016. All of the increase has taken place in the slaughter of chicken. The number of slaughtered turkeys has actually decreased, but the slaughtered weight remains about 340 tons as in 2016 since a larger proportion of slaughtered turkeys are of the heavier sort in 2017. Figure E shows how the total slaughter of poultry has developed since the year 2014.The egg delivery statistics for January and February 2017 were unavailable at the date of publication. They will be published in the Swedish Board of Agriculture Database as soon as possible.
