Increase in organic milk production
In 2017 there was an increase in the amount of milk delivered to dairies by 12 % or 45 00 tonnes. In total, 414 200 tonnes organic milk was delivered to the dairies. Almost 15 % of the total milk production in Sweden was organic in 2017.
Production of organic drinking milk decreased by 3 % during 2017 compared with 2016. At the same time, production of acidified milk showed a decrease by 5 %. The production of cheese increased by almost 36 %.
The slaughter of organic cattle increased by 1 % to 19 300 tonnes in 2017. About 15 % of the total slaughtered cattle were reared on holdings applying organic production methods. In total, the slaughter of organic sheep and lambs was estimated to 1 100 tonnes in 2017. This means that 21 % of the sheep and lambs slaughtered were reared on holdings applying organic production methods.
The slaughter of organic pigs was estimated to 4 800 tonnes in 2017, about the same as in 2016. For chickens there was a large increase in production in 2016. The increase in production continued in 2017 but the rate of increase was lower. The slaughter increased by 9 %. However, the number of organic pigs and chickens is low in Sweden and as a consequence slaughter of organic pigs and broilers is also low. In 2017, about 2 % of the total slaughter of pigs and 1 % of the slaughter of broilers came from animals reared on holdings applying organic production methods.
Organic egg production delivered to wholesalers had a share of 17 % of total egg production in 2017. Organic eggs delivered to wholesalers were estimated to 20 400 tonnes in 2017, a decrease by 5 % compared with 2016.
