In EnglishSummary Summary
This
report provides final data for the year 2009 for organic and non-organic
farming concerning yield per hectare and total production of cereals, dried
pulses, oilseed crops, table potatoes and temporary grasses. The methods used
for the crop products surveys for organic farming are the same as for the ordinary
crop products surveys. The results are presented for
counties, production areas and for all of Sweden. The production areas are
shown in Map 1. The
tables show the number of observations, yield per hectare in kg, total production
in metric tons, crop areas, the share of the organic crop area compared to the
total crop area, the quota of the yield from organic farming and the yield from
non-organic farming. Standard errors are given for yield per hectare and total
production. Cereals, dried pulses and
oilseed crops
Total
production for the whole country of cereal crops from areas with subsidies for
organic farming is estimated at 232 300 tonnes. This is slightly more than
4 % of the total production of cereals. The total
production of oats from areas with subsidies for organic farming is estimated
at 73 600 tonnes or about 10 % of the total production of oats. Among the
cereals, oats is the crop that shows the highest total production from the area
with subsidies for organic farming. Total
production of peas and field beans from areas with subsidies for organic
farming is estimated at 5 100 tonnes and 14 600 tonnes respectively. For
peas this production corresponds with 10 % of the total production of peas and
for filed beans the organic share of the total production is as high as 56 %. The 2009
harvest of rape and turnip rape from areas with subsidies for organic farming
is estimated at about 2 400 tonnes, which is about 1 % of the total production
of rape and turnip rape. Statistics
on crop yields for cereals, dried pulses and oilseed crops have been based on
an interview survey. The farmers can also use Internet as a tool for data
delivery to Statistics Sweden. The
sample of the 2009 survey for organic farming consists of 1 877 farmers
out of about 5 700. The survey was carried out in October and November. Information
was requested for total farm production in tonnes of the crops and their
average moisture content. Yields per hectare at the farm level are calculated
by dividing the production by the crop area of the farm. Unharvested crop areas
are included and will lower the yield per hectare. Crop area statistics has
been calculated from data on areas with subsidies for organic farming. Crop
areas cut as green fodder have been excluded. Unharvested areas and areas cut
as green fodder are presented in separate tables. Potatoes
The total
production for table potatoes from areas with subsidies for organic farming is
estimated at 11 200 tons. This is almost 2 % of the total production of table potatoes.
The organic potato yield per hectare is 41 % of
the yield compared with non-organic farms. The results
are based on a survey with a sample of 190 holdings with table potatoes
registered for organic farming subsidies. The
tables show the number of observations, the reduced yields per hectare in kg
and total production in metric tons. Standard errors are also presented. Unharvested
areas are shown in a separate table. As for reduced yields, the yield per
hectare is reduced for small, blighted and green potatoes. These reductions are
made with standard values. Adjustments in the reduced yields have also been
made for unharvested areas, which have lowered the yield per hectare. Temporary grasses
The total
production of temporary grasses from areas with subsidies for organic farming
is estimated at 901 100 tons, at 16.5 % moisture content. This is almost 19 per cent
of the total production. The yield per hectare is about 76 % for the organic farming compared
to the non-organic farming. The results are based on a survey with a sample
size of 500 holdings. The survey
covers only temporary grasses harvested as hay, hay-silage or silage, and includes
regrowth. It does not cover temporary grazings or regrowth from temporary
grasses that is grazed. List of tables 1a. Winter wheat. Harvest in 2009. Organic farming 1b. Winter wheat. Harvest in 2009. Non-organic farming 2a. Spring wheat. Harvest in 2009. Organic farming 2b.
