Summary

The statistical figures for 2007 are based on a questionnaire that was sent to horticulture holdings which cultivates at least 0.25 hectares of fruit trees.

Fruit farms are largely located in the southern parts of Sweden, mainly in the county of Skåne. Approximately 80 % of the cultivated apple tree area and 90 % of the cultivated pear tree area is located in Skåne.

The total cultivated area for apple trees is 1 194 hectares, a decrease by approximately 140 hectares (10 %) since the survey was last conducted in 2002. The total cultivated area of pears is approximately 119 hectares, a decrease by 52 hectares (30 %) since 2002. However, the total number of planted apple trees has increased during the period of 2003-2007. Even the total number of planted pear trees has increased in the last five-year period. A reasonable explanation might be that the number of trees planted per hectare has increased. Modern large-scale fruit farms may plant as much as 3 000 trees per hectare.

The five most common apple varieties in Sweden are Ingrid Marie/Karin Schneider, Aroma/Röd Aroma, Discovery, Cox Orange and Gravensteiner/Röd Gravensteiner. Ingrid Marie/Karin Schneider represents approximately 25 % of the total area of apple trees. The five most common pear varieties are Clara Frijs, Conference, Carola, Alexander Lucas and Herzogin Elsa. Clara Frijs represents approximately 36 % of the total area of pear trees.
