The number
of horses in Sweden is estimated to 362 700 in the year 2010. The standard
error of this estimation is 5.5 %. This gives us the 95 % confidence interval
323 600 – 401 800. The number of horses is also presented per county in this
report, but the standard error is substantially higher, so the figures should
be interpreted with caution. Number of locations with
horse
The number
of locations with horses in Sweden is estimated to 77 800. The standard error
of this estimation is 2.8 %. The definition of a location in this study
includes both properties with buildings or properties without buildings. Number of horses per 1 000
inhabitants
The number
of horses per 1 000 inhabitants is 39 for the whole country. The counties of
Stockholm an Upper Norrland have the lowest number of horses per 1 000
inhabitants with 22 and 21 respectively. The island Gotland has the highest
number of horses with 180. The second highest was Blekinge with 74 horses per 1
000 inhabitants. These numbers should also be interpreted with caution because
of the high standard errors. Share of horses in urban and
rural areas
The result
of the study shows that ¾ of all horses and ⅔ of all establishments with
horses are located in city areas and adjoining rural areas. Method and comparability
with the 2004 study
The target
population is all establishments with horses and the frame population is a
register which contains all real estate in Sweden 2009. The survey item is the
real estate and a sample of real estate owners was drawn that received a
questionnaire asking about the number of horses on a specific property. For
some municipalities, data was gathered from a register on stable inspections
instead of sending out questionnaires. Total coverage was attained for riding schools. A few
adjustments in the method have been done in the study 2010 compared to the
study 2004. In the study 2010, all real estate is included in the frame population,
regardless of wether it includes a building or not. In the study 2010 the
extended real estate held about 50 000 horses. If we take that into account,
the number of horses in Sweden has increased by about 10–20 % since 2004. List of tables
