The Mid
Term Review for Sweden began to take effect from 2005. As the crop area
statistics are mainly based on the application for area based subsidies, this
reform had an effect on these statistics. Above all, it had an effect on the
areas of temporary grass, green fodder and fallow land which are estimated to increase
by 10, 11 respectively 20 % between 2004 and 2005. The estimated total number
of agricultural holdings with more than 2,0 hectares of arable land increased
by 14 %, from 65 801 year 2004 to 74 863 year 2005. These
increases don't mean a correspondingly change of the agricultural sector, but
are mainly depending on changed aids rules. The area of cereals
decreased while the area of fallow land and leys increased
The total area of agricultural land
decreased between 1995 and 2004, but after the reform, the total area of
agricultural land increased a little between 2004 and 2005. The total area of
agricultural land is estimated to 3 215 600 hectares in 2005. That is
an increase of 31 600 hectares compared with 2004. At the same time the
total area of arable land increased from 2 660 600 hectares to 2 703
100 hectares while the total area of pasture and meadowland decreased from
523 400 to 512 500 hectares. There are another 33 400 hectares
of pasture and meadowland at the holdings which don't have more than 2,0
hectares of arable land. The area of arable land decreased a
little between 1995 and 2004, but increased by 2 % between 2004 and 2005. The
reason was a result of an increase of the area of fallow land from 268 223
to 321 309 hectares and increase of the area of leys from 934 771 ha
to 1 027 294 hectares. The total
area under ley and green fodder was 1 066 900 hectares during 2005, an
increase by 10 % compared with 2004. Areas under oleiferous plants is estimated
to 82 200 hectares in year 2005, which is 2 % less than 2004 but 40 %
more than 2003. The area of follow land increased from 268 200 hectares in
year 2004 to 321 300 in year 2005, an increase by 20 %. The total
area of pasture and meadowland is estimated to 512 500 hectares in year
2005, which is 2 % less than 2004. Number of holdings The number
of holdings with more than 2,0 hectares of arable land is estimated to
74 863, which is 9 062 or almost 14 % more than for year 2004. The
reason is mainly that the number of applications with more than 2,0 hectares of
