Summary Summary
The total area of arable
land in applications for EU-subsidies has increased by 27 600 hectares
Based upon
the applications for EU-subsidies, the total area of arable land has decreased
by 3 300 hectares between 2003 and 2004 whereas the total area of pasture and
meadowland increased by 30 900 hectares. Thus, according to the applications,
the total area of arable land increased by 27 600 hectares during the
aforementioned period. The total area of pasture and meadowland has increased
during several years and this year's increase of over 6 % is due to a number of
different reasons - among other things, the fact that, due to the newly
reformed agricultural policy, pasture and meadowland will entitle farmers to
receive EU-subsidies from the year 2005, must be part of the explanation. Cultivation of oil seeds
increases while cultivation of oats decreases
Based upon
applications, the cultivation of rape and turnip rape increased by 25 700
hectares, or almost 45 %, to 84 300 hectares, whilst the cultivation of cereals
decreased by 26 500 hectares to 1 127 600 hectares. According to the
applications for EU-subsidies, this year's total area under oilseeds will be
the largest since 1996, but still considerably less than before. The large area
of oilseeds in 2004 can be explained by relatively high prices and good
conditions during the autumn sowing. Among grain crops, the total area under oats is
expected to have decreased by 49 200 hectares, approximately 18 %, to 230 700
hectares, whilst the total area under barley is expected to have increased by
30 500 hectares, around 7 %, to 398 100 hectares. The decrease in total area
under oats can be explained by lower market prices for this crop. The
definite areas for different crops in 2004 may differ to some degree from these
numbers. This is due to the farmers handing in applications for EU-subsidies
prior to sowing. The farmers have the opportunity to change their applications
until mid-June. List of tables
