Rules on importing dog semen to Sweden
Importing from EU and EFTA countries
There are no restrictions on the import of dog semen from EU Member States or from Andorra, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Norway, San Marino, Switzerland or the Vatican. Importing from non-EU countries
You need an import licence
If you want to import dog semen from non-EU countries except the ones mentioned above, you first need to apply for an import licence from the Board of Agriculture. The licence costs SEK 500. It is valid for an unlimited number of imports during one year. It will take 30 days for us to process your application and give you the licence. Before you submit your licence application you need to pay the fee of SEK 500 to our bank giro account No 5693-2486. Please identify the payment with the number 10504. When you submit your application you need to enclose proof of this payment.
Import via a border inspection post
You may only bring dog semen from non-EU countries — except the ones mentioned above — via an approved border inspection post. You need to notify the border veterinarian at the inspection post at least one working day in advance. The documents mentioned below must be presented in original together with the import license to the border inspection veterinarian upon import.Three documents needed upon import
Except for the import license, the following two documents must accompany the semen upon import: 1) Semen collection health certificateA health certificate concerning the semen donor dog must be issued by a competent veterinarian in the country of export at the time of semen collection. It must be issued in English and contain the following information:- the identity number and description of the donor dog
- a statement that the dog was healthy at the time of semen collection and not suspected of transmitting contagious disease
- a confirmation by the collecting veterinarian that the semen from the dog referred to in the certificate has been enclosed in a semen container which has been sealed and marked with the identity data of the dog.
2) Test result stating freedom from brucellosis and leptospirosisA blood sample analysis must be performed to show that the donor dog does not have antibodies against leptospirosis or brucellosis. The time of sampling differs depending if you will send fresh or frozen semen:- As regards fresh semen, the blood sample must be taken within 15 days before the import of the semen to Sweden.
- As regards frozen semen, the blood sample must be taken no less than 20 days and no more than 30 days after semen collection (e.g collection on Jan 1 means sampling allowed during Jan 21 - Jan 31).
Exemption regarding dogs with a valid leptospirosis vaccination
If the donor dog was identity marked and vaccinated against leptospirosis at least 14 days and no more than a year before semen collection, there is no need for the leptospirosis analysis. In this case, a leptospirosis vaccination certificate carrying the dog´s identity number replaces the leptospirosis test result. You need to present the vaccination certificate together with the import licence, the semen collection health certificate and the brucellosis test result both at the border and to the veterinarian who performs the insemination.
Artificial insemination of dogs
You need to engage a veterinarian who has an approval to perform artificial insemination of dogs. To find such an approved veterinarian, you can ask the Division for Pet Animals at the Board of Agriculture, or simply ask your nearest animal hospital.
